Volvo or Sony-problem?

Hello everyone,

I own a 1992 965, and I've been trying to build a nice stereo system in it. It has a Sony CDX-M630. Later I installed a 'rotary commander' (sort of remote by wire), an amplifier, 10 new speakers and a multi CD-player. Just last week I found an old automatic antenna from a Volvo 945, which I also installed immediately. Everything worked like a charm, it produced a beautiful deep sound. But yesterday something odd happened: while driving, the radio turned itself off, and then back on. A few minutes later it did the same thing again. Later on it began to happen more frequent. And when I arrived at work, the radio was going on and off every second... I couldn't do anything about it. There was no more sound, and I couldn't even turn the thing (really) off. So I pulled out the fuse. Yesterday evening I tried to use the reset button of the radio, doesn't work. I checked the fuse of the radio, which seems fine (should be, because the radio receives power). I checked the wiring, also OK. I pulled things out (antenna, rotary commander, ...) to see what would happen, nothing.

So, as I see it, there are two possibilities:
1. the €500-radio itself is broken, it has an electronic problem (it has a 1-year warranty and I bought it 1,5 years ago off course... very nice, regarding everything else works only on Sony-radios) ;
2. something happens with the power to the radio, but I don't have the slightest idea what to look for (some relay?).

Anyone? Many thanks.

    Check your power supply source. Once I hooked up my stereo to the instument cluster power supply on an F150. When I cranked the stereo, the dash lights would flicker. When I turned up the dash lights, interior light or other accessories, like the horn, the stereo would cut out. Check your power source for the antenna also, since that is switched off the radio and has a separate dash switch.

    Good Luck,

    Tom

    Check for a short in your speaker wiring. High-end radios have protection circuits that will shut the radio down if they try to drive a 0-0hm load.

      Thanks.

      You were right, there was a short. The one cable that I didn't pull out of the radio was the one from the multi-cd player... And that cable caused it. It fell out (?, was probably not connected properly, mea culpa) of the multi-cd player and hit the steel, very stupid. It's all fixed now.
