radiator got bite 140-160

My fan clutch went bad really fast in my 72' automatic 142E and the fan bite the radiator pretty hard. Hard enough to leak coolant all over the road as I sat there waiting for my friend to come pick me up. So my question is what can I do? I’ve already got another fan clutch and a new fan is obviously needed, but what about the radiator? Will a radiator out of a 240 fit into my car? Does anyone know where I can get a new one? In the Seattle/Tacoma area? Is there any way I can more cheaply fix the broken one as opposed to just getting another? I really would like one of my Volvos to run so please help me, thank you all very much!

    Colin,
I have an automatic 73 144 that my daughter drives and I maintain. She lost all coolant recently and I found the core to be beyond salvaging. Local rad shop ordered a new three row core, installed it within the existing tanks $180.00 Canadian, one day turn around. I was happy with this given that I had little in the line of other choices for the automatic version of the 140 series.

I've fairly certain that a 240 radiator will not work... You need one from a '71-74 140.... maybe even '71-72. I know that they ain't interchangable between 70 and 71. Not sure if they changed again in '73 with the new grille and stuff. Also keep in mind that you need one from an automatic car.

I had a similar issue some time ago... water pump went south (car was facing south when it happened). Fan ate the radiator... I managed to pick all the thin fins out of the area and get it down to just the water lines. Cleaned it up good, and globbed a bunch of solder in the area... I was most suprized that it worked, but it did. Not a drop of leakage. If you ain't experienced with soldering though, you'd be best to have it done... or at least find a spare radiator first in case it don't work.

    Best of luck with it!
    -Matt

Yep - the auto tranny cars of that era had the heat exchanger built into the right side radiator tank (initially warms the trans fluid, the cools it under hard use).

Given all the particulars of finding an exact match, and the fact that an exact match would also be 30+ years old I'd say taking yours to a radiator shop would be the best bet. Even if it is really, really mangled they can recore the whole thing.

Unless the radiator is hurt real bad a local radiator shop should be able to fix it. These old radiators are made of heavier stuff and are easier to fix than newer ones. I have no clue if any 240 radiators would fit or not but my guess after having the radiator out of my kid's 240 is that it won't.

I just put in an electric fan on my 71 142. Better gas miliage, less engine noise, and improved AC performance in town are benifits. Mine is mounted in front of the AC condenser as a shover. (Guess you don't worry about AC much. My daughter lives in Shoreline and we were there in August. Boy was it nice!) It is a 14" generic made by Hayden with an adujustable thermostat having its probe in the radiator. Consequently, the fan only runs when stopped in traffic or if the AC is on. Cost about $110.

Living in Kansas I will know more about it by the end of summer.
