A/C: R12 Compressor on R134a system? Help! 200

I bought a 1993 240 Wagon which had the r134a system from the factory. However, some yahoo removed the A/C compressor and chopped the two hoses that go to the compressor. I am going to replace the unit.

I have a compressor from a 1988 240 which should mount right up where the old compressor was. However, can I use it? I don't know if it's an R12 compressor or an R134a compressor. How can I tell? If it's R12 and I can use it, do I still do a conversion on it? I don't want to mess up the rest of the system. Are the hose fitting different? Any knowledgeable input appreciated!

Thanks!

Karl

This is a rotary compressor right?

All that you need to do is turn the shaft round and round back and forth to drain all of the mineral oil out of it. Then fill with Ester or PAG oil in the quantity required (check on the web). Replace filter/dryer, and if you can't get all of the oil in the compressor, then put the rest in the F/D.
Evac and recharge. I've done it and it works fine.

Yes this is a rotary compressor from a 1988 Volvo 240 wagon. This is good news. I was starting to think that was all I needed to do. Glad to hear confirmation from someone who has done it, though! I guess I'll order the parts and see if I can get this working. Thanks for the info.

I don't know if it's possible to use the '88 compressor or not, but I know for sure that it was originally for R12 because they didn't go to R134 until '92 or '93.

Okay... can I run conversion (Ester) oil through the compressor and then just use it?

      Thanks!

hi there you can use the compressor. although im not sure about the expansion valve. the expansion valve on my 86 has a little sticker that says r-12 or r-134. i would suggest flushing out the condenser and evaporator coils. since the lines were cut and open. if your going through all this trouble you might as will do the job right so you dont have to do it again next year. also get the r 134 adapters that are 90 degree type fittings. or i think they make a hose with a tee for easy charging of the low side since someone cut the hoses. i run 134 in south florida and it blows 42 degress out of the vent.

The expansion valve is up under the dash where the refrigerant lines come through the firewall and connect to the evaporator core. May be wrapped with black insulation goop - you can unpeel it from the valve.
