Front strut bump stop and boot 200 1989

When I did the front brakes I noticed the drivers side bump stop has slid down to the bottom. How is it 'mounted' to stay at the top?

Also, Am i correct to assume the boot rolls around the bottom lip of the bump stop to stay in place?

I want to know what else to buy before doing the struts... I need boots but what about the bump stops? They physically look fine, except the driver's side doesn;t sty at the top.

Thanks in advance,
Greg

I agree with Yama.

I don't know how the bump stop could slide to the bottom unless it's torn; I believe a ridge on the strut shaft should be preventing it from sliding down.

The boot does roll aroung the bottom lip of the bump stop.

It sounds like you do need bump stops; check the condition of your boots. If the strut mounts are original, you probably need new ones. Check the rubber in them by looking down into the strut tower opening from inside the hood. Mine had cracks in the rubber.

I did a post recently after doing mine, which you might find helpful: Strut Replacement for Novices

If your using Bilstein HD's the boot is included and the bump stop should be internal. You may need strut mount/bearing but its hard to tell until you get the old one apart. Its also a good time to check your ball joints and tie rods for play. On my 1990 Wagon strut mounts bearings where good, tie rods good 1 side a ball joint had a slit boot and had play. Also a good time to check control arm bushings.
