Engine Surges at Idle No Power? 200

I just replaced both fuel pumps and have a surge at idle when first started. There is a stumble when trying to drive off like it is starving for fuel. If you put it in neutral a rev it up a bit the stumble clears up and drives normally. The surge only seems to happen when first started before I rev it up to blow it out. Any help would be appreciated. The fuel filter is only a few months old and the FPR was replaced about 9 months ago. Thanks Dan

Update on Engine Surges at Idle No Power? 200 1992

Thought I had this fixed but I still have a low power, stumbling off the line untill I rev it up a bit and blow it out. Then it runs fine until shut down again. It feels like it is not getting enough fuel? Old plugs did not indicate it was running rich for the last 12,000 miles.
I cleaned a pretty clean Flame trap, throttle body and IAC motor. Replaced the plugs and disconnected the battery for 20 to reset the computers?
Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Dan

Engine Surges at Idle No Power? 200

I just checked and cleaned the IAC motor, throttle body and flame trap. All were pretty clean for 9 months of operation. I replaced the spark plugs with Bosch Super copper but the old ones looked good, a nice light tan color on the electrodes however they were Bosch platinum that many don't care for.

Still looking for ideas. Thanks Dan

You don't state the model year, so this advice is based on a Bosch LH system. In addition to cleaning the IAC as others have suggested, I think you chould check the throttle posistion switch. It may be out of adjustment, causing the ECU to think the throttle is open, when it is closed. The procedure is outlined in the manual.

Sorry I thought I clicked the year but must have missed it! It's a 92 and I do not get any OBD codes other than 1-1-1, so the computers think all is fine. I will check the throttle body and IAC but they were all taken care of 9 months ago, maybe it's timw again. Thanks Dan

I re-read your initial post. Did the problem start after you replaced both pumps?
Does it matter if the engine is cold or warmed up?
Have you place a gauge on the fuel rail and checked the fuel pressure when the problem occurs and when it clears up?

I replaced the main pump because of no power, it would start but bog down as you tried adding throttle. I could not clear the no power by blowing it out as I can now.
Cold or warm does not seem to make a difference. I don't have a pressure gauge.
The intank pump was replaced because I discovered it was not working, it turned out to be corroded (broken) connection as the wires go into the sender unit. I replaced the pump and rubber hose because I was in there and had the items on hand. Thanks Dan

Might have a sticky air bypass solinoid.

Its kind of a pain to get out but doable.. clean with carb cleaner.
Also on some of these bricks.. after you change out the fuel pumps
and such the car sees different parameters and it takes some driving to
reset the computer.. or so I have been told.. the ECU will compensate
to a point for components degrading... when you install new ones it
needs to "re-adjust".

How many miles are on your clock?

I would say it is getting the fuel it needs, but not the air to back it up.

Try cleaning out your ICV. pull it out, spray some brake cleen in it and shake it like a poloroid picture for a 1/2 min. After a while it gets all varnishy inside and the motor doesn't like to spin normally. If you idle improved, your ICV is the problem. It may not cure it, that just means you need a new ICV soon.
You may need to do this a couple of times.
