B230FT with Regina into a '91 940 with Bosch FI? 900

Hey folks!

I'm in the market for a '93+ B230FT, since I have rod knock (that hasn't gotten more severe in the 6 months I've owned it, but I'm sure it will).

I'd like to get a '93 or newer since apparently they have oil-cooled pistons. Question is, what has to be changed on the new engine so it'll be compatible with my '91 940 (Bosch FI & ECUs)?

Do I just take the knock, FI ECT, RPM sensors off my current and install them in place of the Regina ones on the newer engine?

What about injectors, FPR, I/O manifolds, the turbo itself?

Thanks a lot!

Chris

If it has been knocking for six months, it is piston slap, not rod knock. Rod knock usually last only a few days until catastrophic failure.

The engine will be compatible just as you get it. You might have to deal with EGR and non-EGR, but the fuel injection is the same

North American turbo 940s use LH 2.4 Jetronic, not Regina fuel injection.

Same, same, same, same.

Thanks for the reply and the ghastly photo!! :-@

I definitely have piston slap that goes away once the engine's warm, but another similar sound takes over (it isn't there when cold).

The engine sounds like a Cummins 3800 diesel when it's at running temperature. My mechanic thinks it's either rod knock or a bearing. It's one of those things where I don't want to tear into it myself, never having been into, or pay someone the beans to try and diagnose the problem from the inside.

If I post to the BB a high-quality MP3 stereo recording of the sound, would that help in diagnosis?

Thanks,
Chris

As far as I know all the trubos came with the bosch system, the newer ones (1990 and newer) came with LH 2.4, instead of 2.2. If that is tha case change your engine only and you shouldn't have a problem either way. Keep all the old sensors and make sure there are palces on the block fir them. I think your car will keep going if you don't beat on it. If you keep the oil change intervals short and drive it easy you should be able to keep it going for awhile, also synthetic oil should help.

My 1991 940 turbo sedan has:
Bosch 0280000560 FI ECU and 0227400149 Ignition ECU.
I aquired (for a song) a:
Bosch 0280000563 FI ECU and 0227400148 Ignition ECU from a 1990 740 turbo.
Are these compatible with mine (drop in) or not?
Will they work if replaced as a pair?
I might be willing to swap for the right ones to someone who has
them if they need these.
