Intermittant transmission problem 200 1981

My 1981 240 GL Wagon automatic transmission will not always slip immediatley into gear (forward or reverse). It happens ~ once every 50-100 times and it only happens just after starting (it never has left me stranded at a stop light etc). When it happens I can get the car into gear by increasing the rpm and it will engage. The fluid levels are fine and have recently been changed. Is 390K the most I will get from this transimssion? Is there anything I can do to extend its life?
Thanks
RM

How thorough was the fluid change? Just dropping the pan gets less than half the total in the system. A complete flush might improve the operation.

You can do the flush at the upper cooler fitting on the radiator. See the 700/900 FAQ for procedure.

Thanks Bruce for the advice. I had a shop do the tranny fluid change so I am not sure how thorough it was. I will post another message to let everyone know what happens.

      Thanks,
