960 Auto transmission problems 900 1992

I have a 960 saloon wich suffers from a problem with, what I think is the torque converter "lock up solenoid" sticking when stuck in traffic. - The car jerks violently when drive is engaged, the lower gear changes gets jerky, and when stowing down to stop, the drive stays engaged causing the whole car to shudder before the drive disengages when the RPM drops to 500RPM. Reading the forum it would appeare that this is not an unknown fault. How difficult is it to change the solonoid? Is it possible with the unit installed in the car or does the transmission have to be removed?

You shouldn't need to replace the entire solenoid "pack" as inidcated in an earlier post. Volvo sells the solenoids individually. You only need "solenoid SL" as it is called. When I replaced mine ~1.5 years ago, the cost was $150 for the solenoid. If Volvo for some reason stopped selling the solenoids individually, go to Lexus and get one.

As far as replacing the solenoid, it's a very easy job. It can be done with the tranny in place. Simply drop the pan, unbolt the solenoid (held on with one bolt), slip the old one out, slip the new one in, and then replace the pan. That's it. Took me under 45 minutes to replace mine.

Hi Tritan, I would first change the oil and clean the screen in the tranmission and then flush the tranmission with dextron III. Run it around the block a few times and then flush with synthetic fluid such as Amsoil or Mobil one. If you need to put a gasket on the tranny you can get one from Lexus. The solonoid pack form Volvo is over three hundred bucks, I still have not yet found an aftermarket one that will work, but I have had some success in removing the solonoid screen and cleaning that. I have had the same problem in my Moms 92, 960, it seems only to occur when in traffic and the trans temp gets higher to cause the solonoid to stick. I wanted FCP Groton to find a solonoid pack, but as of last week it is not available. Good luck. Pauli.

Does your 960 have the AW 70 or the AW 30 series transmission?

If the former, complete instructions for solenoid change are in the 700/900 FAQ.
