Need help repairing 1974 145 in Portland OR 140-160 1974

I have a 1974 145 that has stress fractures in the subframe. I have a replacement subframe but do not have time to work on the car. The car is not my daily driver (that's my 1982 242) but I very much want to get this car fixed and back onto the road. I cannot afford the cost that a regular repair shop would charge to fix this. I am looking for someone from the Portland Oregon area who would be willing to tackle this job at a reasonable price. I can deliver the car to you with the subframe, new engine mounts and any other parts needed for the job. If you are interested reply to Duncan directly at duncanf@juno.com

Shayne at IPD has helped me before, maybe he'll be willing to give you a hand. Call IPD at 1-800-444-6473 and ask for Shayne. Then tell him your story, maybe he will maybe he won't. But its worth a try. Peace

By "subframe" do you mean the front crossmember? The one the engine
mounts and front suspension mount on? Other than wheel alignment, it is
a pretty straightforward job, and with the right equipment should not be
too expensive. Cameron or Shayne at IPD might be able to recommend someone.

Yup, the front cross member is exactly what I am talking about.

No it isn't a big job. I think I could probably do it in an afternoon. Unfortunately, due to working 2 jobs, remodeling my house, and trying to be a husband and father, I have no free time to do the work.

My regular mechanic quoted me $700 to do it. Which I think means that he doesn't want to do it.

It's not a job I'd quote a flat rate on. If everything goes perfectly, it takes less than a day. OTOH, I've spent a full three days just getting lower control arms to come loose. Your mechanic's price about splits the difference.

Phil,

Pardon me for butting in, but I've been itching to know - what's the status of the MPPE? Any plans to update the site?

Thanks.

Rich.

Itch no more 140-160 1974

Rich,

We just had a discussion about the MPPE on another thread. I'm just back from running to town and back with it -- it's a lot of fun.

Yes, I will resurrect VClassics. My Volvo projects went over the top to the point where they stopped being fun, and that made the webzine stop being fun as well (maybe didn't help that I spent the last four years in a cubicle being a Web developer for a living). Our regular contributors pretty much all went through similar evolutions. We also bought a hunk of forest on an island and spent '03 putting a house on it and then moving in... just in time for a NW winter with nowhere to work on the cars or shelter them. The new garage/shop is just now finished and the cars dried out and revived, so I'm feeling much better about webzines and life in general.

Yeah, I know, excuses, excuses.

8^)
