A dumb gasoline question - how long can it be stored? 200 1981

My 81 245 has been sitting for 3 years now. I replaced the wiring harness in 2001 and drove it about a week. It sat for one year before that. It had a full tank at the time. Ever since the new harness, it would stall when putting it in gear. The flame trap is clean. I've replaced the CIS tee, the Cap & rotor, new plugs, wires, and turned up the idle a bit. I've un plugged & plugged in the O2 sensor. It starts up perfect, idles good (a bit high now) and will run decent until I put it in drive. If I keep my foot on the gas for a second when engaging drive it won't stall otherwise it dies. Once it's in gear and running, it's OK and the idle drops down.
Could the gas have gotten weak from sitting? My only other thought is a vacuum leak from the upper manifold or the rubber bellow between the upper & lower may be leaking. Since it was removed and A shop re-assemble it for me after the new harness, could they have screwed something up? Unfortunetly the're out of business now. Any Ideas?
Ben

A dumb gasoline question - how long can it be stored? 200 1981

I hear horror stories here, but...
In high school, after I got my driver's license, my sister told me
that I could have the Fiat Spider that she had had sitting in our
garage for the past 5 years. Not one to refuse a challenge, I went
to work. Replaced the spark plugs, replaced the fuel hose from tank
to pump, set the points and timing, changed the oil, water, and
battery. The car started right up, after I (accidently) nudged
the automatic choke closed. I put some more gas in the tank, and
it ran very well indeed. No damage was done to the electric fuel
pump or carbs. Maybe fuel injection systems are more sensitive, but
I doubt it, because carbs have tiny orifices (jets) whose size is
_critical_ if you want to get the correct mixture. OTOH, F.I.
systems are partially self-correcting via the O2 sensor.

    Ben,

Gasoline will break down after only about 3 months unless a stabilizer is added. Then you should not let it set more than about a year. Also as an electric fuel pump engineer I can tell you that the fuel pump will not last if it sucks up a bunch of water or debris. So get the old gas out of there.

My project brick had sat for 7 years or so before I took it on, and I know the fuel pump had not done too many miles before the accident. I think you just explained how we managed to kill the pump in the process of restoring the car.

You could probably re-finish your furnature with the varnish that's in your tank right now.
Get rid of it and flush out the lines, then re fill with some good stuff and try again.

You should never try to run anything on gas that's 3 years old, unless it has a stabilizer added to the gas before it was parked. Gas, depending on the season it was purchased, the part of the country it was purchased in, and the climate where the car was stored, can degrade significantly in a matter of weeks. Drain the tank and refill it with new gas.
