Alternator Upgrade 200

I have a 1986 Volvo 240 DL Station Wagon with the B230F engine and an automatic transmission. The car's accessories, such a windshield wipers and directional flashers have slowed up and stoped when I put the newly installed accessories are turned out. I think the car has the standard 55 amp unit. How can I upgrade this unit with one that has greater amps. Are there any American alternators at 200 amp that can be installed to replace the Bosch unit. Will the 100 amp unit from a V70 fit in a 240?

Firstly, make sure your present alternator is OK by having it checked for amp output. If you really need more amperage, you can upgrade with an 80 amp model from the later yera 240s. My 93 has one, that when rebuilt actually put out 100 amps.

Alternator Upgrade 200

An alternators output is dependent on how fast it is turning. No alternator puts out its' rated maximum at idle. If you rev the engine up a little in neutral does the condition go away? What are the new accessories? If revving the engine helps then it may be that the new items are drawing too much current for the cars wiring. If you can, have the battery voltage measured when this condition occurs to see if it is the alternator.
