gas odor problem solved-may be helpfull to others

I had noticed a fairly strong gas odor coming from back aft in my 86 245. It was so strong that I thought it would be filler neck related- going thru the rear qtr and down to the tank. After looking and seeing no evidence of any leaks-but-still smelling the gas odor from that area of the car--I changed the gas cap-using one I had on hand-and the gas odor problem is gone. Honestly--not sure why a bad cap would cause such a strong gas odor in the car-any one care to explain why?--thanks

Yes, that one has been discussed a few times on Brickboard, but good to remind everyone that a banged up cap will leak fumes.
