wooshing sound when gas is pressed down 200 1982

I have a 1982 244 k-jetronic volvo. When ever i press the gas pedal down firmly it makes a wooshing sound....almost like pressure equalizing in a movie or something. Is this normal?

My second question is where the heck does that small air vent on the driver's left side by the foot area come from. Where is it feeding from? You move a little rubber stopper and it opens or closes and allows massive amounts of air in when open.

thanks for any help

I just ordered one from IPD and it was $20 plus shipping. It resolved the sound problem. Try this link >

Probably a bad vacuum check valve.

When you step on the gas, the pressure in the intake manifold rises and air re-enters the vacuum reservoir, making a whooshing or hissing sound.

Maybe a vacuum leak in the climate controls under the dash. First thing to check is the vacuum check valve, small black and white check valve attached to the intake manifold with a small vacuum line running to the firewall. It should allow air to flow in one direction only.

From the cowl vent in front of your windshield.

My 1979 244GL used to get a whistling, more than I whooshing sound and with a Volvo mobile mechanic from Sydney, Australia, I learned that, with age, the thread on that vacuum valve gets a little worn.

To fix the problem, twice in 4 years and c. 150k, I use that white plumbers tape around the thread. Its then much tighter to screw in but stops all whistle when throttle opened.

      Hope this helps.

      Richard
