Nolisy Water Pump 900 1993

Hi,

1993 940 non-turbo with 150K+ miles. I started to hear what sounded like a noisy belt coming from the engine compartment. It seemed to happen mostly when the car is started cold, and eventually would go away. Now it is more frequent, and if I was to step on the gas it would get louder. I thought it was a belt, but a mechanic told me it sounded like the noise was coming from the water pump. Can a water pump make a noise like a loose belt? And does the water pump move with the rev of the engine?

What is the best brand of water pump to put in this car?

Thank you,

Michael

Yes. And deifinitely proportional to engine speed. I've used Volvo and GMB. I think Volvo OEM is better. Also, check your crank pulley. My harmonic balancer was bad as evidenced by a slight wobbling at low rpm. I think this lead to premature failure of the pump.

At 150K, you might be due for another timing belt, so might as well replace that if you're in there.

Tom
