Bouncing Tachometer 1800 1972

I have 72 1800E. I just had the alternator rebuilt and now it bounces all over the scale. Once in a while it will settle down. It really doesn’t matter if the engine is idling or under power. Any ideas would be great.

Thanks

Clem

How about the theory that it has more to do with working under the hood than replacing the alternator? Better check the ignition primary wiring at the distributor, the ignition condensor and wiring (if you have points) and ALL THE GROUND WIRING on the car including the battery connections. Although I didn't have the same problem, I just replaced the ground strap from the block to the body on the right side down low. It was hanging on by threads.
I'll presume that you've checked out the charging systems? If it really is the alternator, the brushes might "run in" in time.....

The Tach bounced a small amount before the altenator was rebuilt. Mostly when I used the blinkers. I had the alternator rebuilt because it bit the dust. Others recently have indicated that the condenser maybe a big part of the problem. The main ground strap from the engine to the frame looks okay. I’ll have to remove it really tell. Also I am having problems locating the correct condenser. Does anyone know of a good source or have a part number?

The last one I bought was from IPD, but I put a Pertronix pointless kit in several years ago. You might be able to call and find the condensor alone from IPD, but when I checked their site, they were selling a kit for $38.

Just the condensor, p/n 243800 for B20F at $12.26, can be ordered on:

I just went and looked in my garage.... I found 3. Want me to send you one in exchange for a future draft choice?

Thanks I’ll try Swedish first. I have purchased from them before with good luck. Also Don T. maybe able to help. But if I strike out there I’ll take you up on your offer.
          Thanks
          Clem
