Should I Remove A/C From My 1972 ES 1800

My 1800ES is in very good to excellent condition and has the dealer installed optional "Volvo" air conditioning system. The previous owner updated it to the Japanese rotary style air compressor which is a popular improvement to make to these.

Even at it's best this system never really did much to cool the car, and now it is broken. I'm leaning heavily towards simply removing the entire thing and closing up the firewall holes, etc. which would be left behind. One reason is that my right knee bumps into the driver's side vent. Another reason is the overall clutter and mess of this option. It is hardly an elegant solution. The car would also probably be 100 lbs lighter with everthing out of there.

What do you all think? Does anyone want to talk me into keeping this so cool option?

TIA for your thoughts,
John

I repaired the AC system in my 1970 P1800E replacing the air compressor with a rebuilt York until as was the original dealer installed unit. Also replaced the drier and hoses. It works very well now. The rebuilt compresor was about $100 and the total cost was less than $1000 having an AC shop do the rest.

I guess the things that make the difference include
    1. What is the matter with it? $$ to fix?
    2. How long does it stay how hot where you are? It would be more desirable
here in Oklahoma than a lot of places, for example.
    3. Engine overheating problems when it is working?
    etc etc.

Yea... I'd say yank it out. THem nice corner windas open all the way backwards, and although doing that does make the appearance of ears on your car, it blows lots of cool outside air in...

If/when you do remove the system, do so carefully... those are somewhat hard to come by, and probably worth some money to someone who really wants it. Might even be good to document the exact location of any mounting points, plumbing and wiring (pictures and/or drawn diagrams etc...), and keep all the parts together so it can someday be retrofitted to someone else's car. You can probably sell the system for enough to cover a top notch batch of tune up parts and maybe some brake pads or something.

You don't need no steenkin' A/C in Morgan Hill; scrap it.

I pulled mine out, at least out of the bay. Tons more room to work and less weight. I did however leave the cockpit stuff intact. I wasn't hitting anything.
