1990 Volvo 740 GL - Strange noise coming through air vents 700 1990

Hi, I'm a relatively new car owner, and also a new driver. I just bought a 1990 740 GL. The body is amazing, and the guy who owned it before me (one owner only) has taken great care of this car. You could eat off the engine.

Having said that. I'm a little concerened about a noise that's coming out of my air vents, could be the heater core? Bearing? Not sure, but the noise is there when the temperature selector is off, and when I do make the selection it's only louder. It could be a faulty fan (bearing) or it could the sound of fluid bubbling in the rad, it's so hard to say, maybe even a combination of both.

I'm suspecting it's the radiator, and probably needs fluid. Since I only just got this car today, and haven't had a chance to get the maintenance manual, does anyone recognize this phenomenon, and if it is that rad, is it a pressurized rad system, or can I just simply open and fill it without much fuss?

Thanks

Iīm driving a 1990 740 GL too. From the center panel air inlets often comes a noise. The problem is known to Volvo and how to get rid of it is described in service message 90/2.

Where would I find service message 90/2? Is that in the owner's manual, or another manual? As well, did you ever have any problems starting this car? I drove this car for the first time after I bought it, and it died on my way back home trying to exit the grocery store parking lot.

The mechanic was able to restart it in the morning, drove it around, parked it and tried to start it an hour later, no turnover. It's now gone to the volvo mechanic to sort out, but everyone seems stumped? Fuel pump? Vacuum? Compressor? Any thoughts? I'm starting to worry I've made a terrible mistake.

thanks

My source of information is a repair manual from AUTO INFO Publishing Ltd, Ireland. Some service bulletins from Volvo are reproduced in the end of the book. Maybe an Volvo-dealer could support you if you donīt find this manual. The measures described to get rid of the noise are fairly easy to do.

I never experienced any trouble with my car. After over 300 000 km itīs just rolling along.

Good luck
