Hazardous Trailing Arm 200 1986

The bushings are bad. The car wobbles and hydroplanes without effort. It's shakey. It's noisy. I don't like driving it in this condition.

On the lift, you could see the bushings are worthless.

I'm not a mechanic. What tools am i going to need to replace the bushings?

Please help.

Thank you.

    First, get a manual.

No special tools are required beyond decent 1/2-in drive sockets and some combination wrenches. Basically, you're unhooking the sway bar and ball joint, then the aft bushing support (3 bolts), and finally the long bolt at the front pivot. Typically only the rear bushing needs replacing, but if you have a shop do your press work then get front and rear done. Note that a different rear bushing is used for each side of the car. Also, on re-installation, the car should be on its wheels when the fear bushing nut is given its final torque. The exhaust header pipe interferes on the passenger side, so you may have to get creative, OR loosen/remove the pipe big PITA).

FWIW, when I did mine the rear bushing was a bear to remove off the A-arm stud. I drilled out the rubber, then used a chisel (lightly) to open up the inner steel sleeve along its split line. I put some never-seize on the stud before re-installing on the car.

Are you talking about EVERY bushing?

the track rod bushings are pretty easy, pull it off and take it too a machine shop with the new ones, in 15min they will have the new ones pressed in for you.

Same with the panhard rod bushings.

The trailing arm bushings are a bit different. BOTH also need to be pressed in. the best way to do it is this. remove the trailing arm as described in your bentley manual, now you can press out the old front bushing and install a new front bushing. The rear bushing needs to be done ON the car with a special tool. look at the link below for instruction on how to make one for about $15. It works great (the volvo tool is $200).

As for how to do it, check the archives there is usually something in there as it is rather common, or your bentley will still do, it is really a straight forward procedure.

One more tip, if you live in the rust belt like I do, YOU WILL NEED AIR TOOLS, otherwise normal hand tools will suffice, but air tools are still nice. Also, in the rust belt, you will need an air chisel to cut the old rear bushing out, since it is probably rusted in solid by now.

You could use poly. bushings for the rear trailing arms, which would
allow you to re-use the old shell. FCP sells them now, I think.
