I have seen a couple of 244 and 246's.

I own a 240, what's the difference between these vehicles?

Thanks

    what's the difference between 240 and 244 and 246's 200

    The first number is the series (200, 700, 900)
    The second number is the number of cylinders (4, 6, or a funny guy saying 8)
    The last number is the number of doors (2,4,5).

    240= 4 cylinder, 2 door sedan
    244= 4 cylinder, 4 door sedan
    245= 4 cylinder, wagon (tailgate is the fifth door)

    264= 6 cylinder, 4 door sedan
    ect. ect.

      In the 2-series, the second digit equals the number of cylinders.
      However, some 760's had a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and 780s
      didn't have 8-cylinders - they either had a mediocre V-6 or a
      turbo 4. So, in the 7-series, the middle number came to (sort of)
      represent the trim level.

        Your 100% correct...I screwed up on that one.
        700's don’t really hold the same numerical system as our 240's. The 760's and 780's mess up the entire system. Sorry to mislead anyone.

          As do the 240 diesels, technically. (Having a 6-cylinder, despite nomenclature.)

            Some of them. Some Diesels have the VIN of a 240. Some a 260.

            There were also 1981 cars that had a 4 cylinder engine but 264 VIN numbers.

              Yep - son's 81GL has the YV1BX... v.i.n. despite the B21F under the hood. The insurance company therefore lists it on the policy as a 264. Can't talk them out of it.

                Well, it IS a 264. It just happens to have a B21F in it! I had one, too.

                I've also had an '80 245 with a D24. And it IS (was) a 245.

                Nothing to lose sleep over.

                It's hard to talk the insurance co. out of anything once they've got a notion- I once had a $100 20-year-old Ford 6-cylinder... which I paid extra for because 1) it was a "Mustang" and 2) double-whammy, the thing was red. I couldn't convince them it WASN'T a "muscle-car".

                  Well, if the incurance company refuses to listen to reason, you
                  can always vote with your feet. Unless your driving record is
                  _really_ bad, I'm sure that other companies would be willing to sell
                  you insurance and be less obstinate.

    once, the final digit was used to describe the number of doors:

    242-2-door
    244-4-door
    245-5-door (wagon)

    If you've ever seen a 246, I'll eat my hat.

    Later, they just all became 240.

      The hood of my wagon opens. Does that make it a 246? And the gas cap has a cute little door -- does that make it a 247? And the glovebox has a door -- does that make it a 248? And the storage compartment...

      ...oh, never mind.

    a 246 doesn't exist. I believe you mean 245...but anyways, the last number (2, 4, or 5), used to refer to the number of doors a 240 had. 242 was a coupe, 244 sedan, and 245 a wagon. They got rid of the last number around 1980 and just went to calling them all 240's, regardless of whether it was a wagon, sedan, or coupe. hope this helps.
