front struts 700

I'm looking at replacing the original front struts on a 85 744gle na that is being fixed for my teenage son. Any one have Gabriel struts on their car? I've seen the price of Bilsteins, Boge, and Koni struts and see a pair of Gabriel struts for $33.00. I'm using Gabriels on the rear of my 88 745 with overload springs and don't mind the ride.

As a note when replacing new front struts on an older car you will probably see the front of the car riding higher than the rear due to worn front springs. This is probably a good time to put new springs as long as things are apart and to do the job right. (sport springs 150.00?)

      Regarding struts:
You get what you pay for. Boge turbo gas will give you a much more controled ride (read - safer for your son). Plus they have a lifetime warrantee. So yes they are more expensive, but I think the Boge is unquestuionably a better value than Gabriel.

Regarding springs: I agree, this would be a good time to do them as well, since you will have them off anyway to replace struts/shocks. Replacement springs can be had for $35 each (front & rear) and that includes upgrading the rear to "overload" if you have a wagon. ( order them at www.fcpgroton.com )

Your son's car will be safer, and will ride like new (well, almost)!

      Good luck,

      Jeff Pierce

I just replaced the Gabriel brand strut cartridges and rear shocks on our 1984 242. The 242 has 144,xxx miles, and I don't know how many miles were on the front strut cartridges, but they were totally worn out. The strut cartidges were completely loose and had absolutley no resistance to movement. From my experience I would not use Gabriel shocks/strut cartridges at all.

Stick with the OEM Boge / Sachs struts and you won't be disappointed.
After all you're probably replacing original units, and they're how old?
15 years? They've lasted this long, and I'd expect similar life/miles out of a new set of them.
For most cars driven normally, the firmer ride of Bilsteins or Konis are unnecessary.
Anything less (Gabriel, Monroe, Sears) is a total shot in the dark, and I wouldn't want 'em on my car.
