I would like to install a small tach in my '88 240 in one of the blank spaces to the right of the instrument cluster. I found one but the seller want's $35 plus shipping. I'm not sure, but that seems a little high. What does everone else think? What car did these originally come out of?

Thanks and happy bricking.

The small tach is worth whatever the market will bear. It was a dealer installed option for 240's starting with the 81 model year. Most people opt for the large tach/small clock that were standard on 240 turbo models, and available as dealer installed options on non turbos.

I have looked at the small tachs and that seems about the going price...haven't bought one yet, like yourself I think its a little high, I'm not sure what they came in... all of the turbo models I've seen in wrecking yards have had the large tach and the small clock...possibly an option? they seem fairly rare to me.

    How much is it worth?

Rather like any antique - it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. It is fully depreciated, and all costs of manufacture, distribution and installation were fully amortized by the first purchaser.

Now, it's an auction market. How badly do you want it? Subjectives are (1) how rare is it, could you find another? (2) How much resource are you willing to spend ($$$, junkyard search time and dirt, etc.) (3) What would you have to give up to allocate the $35 to the tach and not the _________ ?

Can you go out and earn an additional $35? How long would that take?

That's the fun part of eBay - all these @#$% trade-offs and the challenge of being the winning bidder. If the tach is not at a formal auction like eBay, make an offer.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
