Cam Seal Retainer -- ? 200 1989

Has anyone used the cam seal retainer from IPD ?

http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?CategoryID=95&NodeID=4991&RootID=629

Are the 14.50 dollars good insurance?

I have read recently a few posts where it was mentioned that the rear rubber plug blew out (crank case pressure) and oil everywhere, a mess.

Out of curioisty I put my head behind the head and felt the rubber plug prutruding somewhat, pushed it back in. No oil leak though. Just wondering is this retainer is a good idea.

Thanks.

I would recommend Don Foster's plate over IPD's (having used both) because:

    1) It's cheaper and easier.

    2) IPD's is well-intended, but has problems (IMHO), considering that:

    > The plate has a laser-cut tab which must be pried out to contact the Cam Seal.

    > The kit says to "eyeball" the seal area to estimate how much to pry the tab out. (Ever try to "eyeball" the rear of the head?)

    > The kit also says to pry the tab out with a screwdriver. But only a jeweler's screwdriver will fit the thin laser-cut, and would bend before the tab will.

I had to punch the tab out over open vise jaws (by trial and error) to get the recommended contact with the seal. Eyeballing and screwdriver were of no use.

IPD could have supplied the plate with the tab pre-bent to a fixed, nominal dimension that would ensure a good contact with the seal — with instructions to adjust, if necessary.

if the plug is pushing out, check the flame trap and itake port for clogging. the plate just means no mess, rather than letting the plug push out and having the oil follow it. good lucki, chuck.

      Flame trap is clean.
I think problem is from oil separator, I am planning on doing the test where you blow in a tube in it with oil filler cap removed.

      Any other suggestions?

      Thanks Porkface.

if the oil separator is clear, the maybe the engine is producing more blowby than the system can handle. do the plate and keep an eye on oil consumption. if it burns a qt. per 300-500 miles. if it takes longer to burn a qt, then don't worry about it. good luck, chuck.

Make your own for next to nothing using Don Foster's suggestion:

Your picture can't be any better than my picture because my picture is your picture... perhaps I should have made that more clear rather than calling your picture your "suggestion".

Look, I'm dumb but I'm not that dumb. I know my picture when I see it.... but somehow the color balance in your version has turned green. Kinda like happened with you picture of the comp board fix.

I found that the software I was using at the time (Picture Publisher)was adding green to .jpg images each time they were saved. I have since been using Adobe Photoshop 7 but find that I sort of miss that green tint on all my images:-)

With Photoshop, you can correct bad color balance.

              I have PS 7, 6, 5.5, and 5.0.

              Truthfully, I prefer 5.0.... but's that's because I have a slow computer, and 5.0 is forgiving.

You like the green? Perhaps you're a bit Irish....

Do you also like Guinness Stout?
