'86 kinda starts, wont run 200

I just picked up a one owner '86 240. It will sort of start, very rough idle, then dies. There is a bit of black soot near the rear tailpipe. My son has the Bentley manual for 240's at college, so here I am on BB. Everything is connected under hood. This 240 has a more modern injection than the '83's and '84's I am a bit more familiar with. This isnt K-Jetronic, looks like the injectors are wired. There seems to be a airflow sensor ahead of the "throttle plate". This car has had maintaince, just not enought. Looks like it could use a set of plug wires, cap etc. But seems like it should idle. Any ideas would be much appreciated.Thanks.

'86 now it runs- now oil leak!!! 200

Ok. It turned out to be the plugs. I had some spare VW plugs that fit, not the right ones, but clean and new. Anyway, runs pretty good, smells rich. Now a new problem- big time oil leak at the front passenger side valve cover. I mean really leaking. Its running down the side of the block, water pump and alternator. Can a valve cover gasket leak that bad? Or would it be the cam seal?

This car is in serious need of basic tune up. Its running really rich. The past owner thought the transmission was bad, but it just needs a clutch adjustment !!!

You've blown out the half moon shaped disk in the head at the back of the valve cover. Oil will just pour out this opening. Just stick your finger under the back of the valve cover and you'll see what I mean. This is almost always caused by a totally plugged crankcase ventillation system (especially the flame trap and/or oil breather box pickup tube). See if you can find the disk stuck to the back of the engine or firewall or lying on the road. You can prevent that by a) keeping the PCV system clean and b) placing a metal retaining strap behind the disk using the available distributor mounting holes (see the 700/900 FAQ and/or archives for this).

That 25 amp fuse is a well known problem area and I should have had that on my no-start suspect list, especially as your were starting and restarting so much. It rates right up there after the fuel pump relay. Replace the fuse holder with something more robust and waterproof like a marine grade fuse holder (ipd sells them or check out a good auto electric or marine supply store).

If you're running horridly rich then I'd want to check out the fuel pressure regulator and especially the vacuum line going to it. If your PCV system is choked up (and it is) then a thorough cleaning of the throttle body, idle air control valve and an inspection/cleaning of every vacuum and crankcase tube is in order. Among other things, that will cause idle speed, stability and stalling problems. You may also have leaking injectors due to deposits in the injector valves. And just for jokes, how's the air filter? See the 700/900 FAQ for more info on all this.

    You said it has spark.
Is the spark consistent in all cylinders?
If the cap, rotor and wires are suspect then just replace them. That will simplify matters. Use a Bosch cap rather than the cheapo ones at the discount joints.

Ok I disconnected the air meter, didnt make any difference. I removed it and it was pretty clean, had some really fine wires. Cleaned the intake flex track, had about 1-2 teaspoons of oil in it behind the air meter. Pulled the cap and cleaned the terminals. Has spark. Has Volvo spark plugs that are very black and sooty. They smelled of raw fuel. Found a blown 25 amp fuse next to the coil unit, replaced that. It turns over fine, struggles to fire. Any chance the timing belt jumped? Is that common on 240s? I have had one break, but it made a odd sound when cranking. Guess I could check the static timing???? Any idea? Thanks again.

It looks like it is running real rich check the fuel pressure regulator for a gas odor or raw gas in the vacuum hose. It also sounds like a good throtle body and intake hose cleaning is in order. While your at it clean or replace the flame trap and idle air control. Replace the plugs, cap, rotor and wires (if old). Good luck. Dan

Dave is right to tell you the AMM is the usual suspect. It should idle fine with the AMM unplugged but it will not run fine (barely at all) with a bad or unplugged AMM. Sometimes on the board we see comments like "I unplugged the AMM but it runs like crap so is it the AMM". Limp home is just that.

Sounds very much like a bad AMM (air mass meter) -the air flow sensor in the air intake tube. With the ignition off, disconnect the electrical plug on the AMM then try to start the engine. If it now starts and runs a little better then that's almost certainly it. Remedy -a good used AMM and to help avoid this happening again be sure to check the operation of the little thermostat piston in the air box that moves the pre-heat flap (see the 700/900 FAQ here for details).
