D-Jet '20 click' throttle sensor test and other fuel questions. 140-160

Should all injectors be firing at each click? I got 20 clicks, but only the third injector (counting from the back) felt like it was clicking.

Also, I am having fuel pressure problems. It is either a weak fuel pump, or I did not have enough fuel in the tank. It seemed like the fuel pump was sucking air with the fuel out of the tank. I only put a gallon or so in my tank that was bone dry, so either I didn't have enough in the tank to really submerge the pick up tube, or my pick up tube has a hole in it(like when you have a hole in your straw). I would have just put more fuel in the tank, but I have a leak, so I have to fix that first. Is there anyway to test the fuel pump to see if it is strong enough?

Thanks,
Justin

D-Jet '20 click' throttle sensor test and other fuel questions. 140-160

Justin,

I know that this is somewhat off the subject, but I thought I would share a quick story about my 71 142E.

I installed solid state ignition(Perlux from IPD) and was adjusting it after installation. I had the timing set WAAAAY off and was attempting to start the engine. After 8-10 long cranks on the engine, there was a large explosion. This destroyed the entire exhaust system and blew many of the tools off the wall in my garage.

I should have not been so foolish. I had noticed that the fuel pump was kicking in each and every time I attempted to start the car and assumed that it was ok. I was very wrong, because with each start attempt more and more fuel(and fuel vapor) was collecting inside the engine/intake/exhaust and finally it ignited.

Bad news.....

Be careful when dealing with this system. Don't screw up like I did.

Just trying to help if I can,

Jeremy

It's not likely that your pickup is leaking. The pump should run from a can okay. Pumps left with old gas in them often tar up, but if it's whining, it's running. Click in the injectors are sometimes quiet. To test correctly, remove the fuel rail and nozzles and put them into cans. Crank the engine/turn the throttle switch to see if there's spray. White wiring to injectors is old and weak. Pay especial attention to that central grounding point on the intake manifold where they're all crimped together. Unfortunately, there is little slack, so repairing that, if there is a problem, is a bother.

It's not likely that your pickup is leaking. It's brass and pretty well protected. Big nut below end of pickup hides a pickup filter. The pump should pull from an exterrnal can with a short hose okay. Pumps left with old gas in them often tar up, but if it's whining, it's running. Click in the injectors are sometimes quiet. Every fuel pump that would run at all that I have tested would put up a LOT
more pressure than I needed (pegged a 100 psi gauge instantly) so I doubt that
is your problem but you HAVE to get fuel TO THE PUMP with no air.

Better fix the leak and try again.

Your injectors should work in pairs so if #3 is the only one you probably
have a bad connection somewhere.

...or bad ECU. The injectors are fired in banks as said, and I think there is 1 transistor for each injector (as opposed to 1 transistor for each bank). Got the schematic at home, and will see if I can find it for you. It will help with tracing signals out of the ECU connector as well.
