940 brake booster 900

Power brakes went south yesterday. All vacuum connections seem to be in order and all other vacuum accesories work fine. I pulled the hose out of the booster when running and had good suction for a second before the engine died. I checked the FAQ and performed those tests. I pump the brakes 'dry' of vacuum, restart the car and get one or two partial applications of boost, then nothing. After the car has been run a minute or two, then shut off, I pulled the hose and get some vacuum suction noise. I was hoping it may be a bad grommet at the booster and put some vaseline on there, to no avail.
I guess what I'm looking for is for one of you to tell me that it's something cheap and easy instead of a new booster. I read something about a check valve, but haven't seen anything near the area that looks like one.
Thank you.....

the check valve is the last thing in the hose before it goes into the booster. make sure the hose isn't kinked at the intake port. good luck, chuck.

I assume the check valve is the white plastic thing between the hose from the manifold and the booster. I pulled this from the booster and replaced it several times. Could I have screwed up the rubber grommet in the booster? I'm not too cheap to replace the unit, but I've read too many times on this board that booster's don't go bad often.

make sure the hose isn't kinked at the intake port, buy a check valve and a grommet and cross your fingers. good luck, chuck.

I have to sheepishly reply tonight. No hose kinks or anything of the kind. Last time I drove the car, the pedal had a 'catch' in it's travel. For fun, I pulled the dust cover from under the dash and there was a metal box (dark, so I don't know yet what it is) blocking pedal travel. Think how stupid I must feel!
Brakes are working just fine now. Phew!!
Thanks for your help and advice.
