Injector seals shot....replacement? 200

Hey...i have a 1982 240 DL NT car

This is a U.S. California model

It is K-Jetronic i beleive....and the seals for the injectors are shot.

What sort of a job is this (easy...hard?) and how long do you think it would take?

I have a basic shade tree mechanic tool set...with limited skills

First figure out if it's a K-Jet or not. I don't know about the LH-Jet, but the K-Jet is pretty easy. You don't have to remove the injectors from the fuel lines if you are just doing seals. You need to remove the injectors from the head. They will come out with or without the black plastic piece that is bolted to the head. The black plastic retainers need to come out also, with or without the injector still in it. Sometimes it's hard to separate the injector from the black plastic retainer. If this happens, and there you are with the injector out of the head and the plastic retainer stuck on the injector, you can do this: First plug all the injector holes with clean pieces of lint-free rag or the like. Then squirt a little PB Blaster into the plastic retainers. Then lay a flat piece of clean wood, say a 1x4 about six inches or so long, on the side of the head and a clean piece of lint-free rag on the wood. Put the end of the injector on the clean rag, get an open end wrench and put it on the injector where it disappears into the plastic retainer, with the wrench perpendicular to the injector. Carefully tap on the wrench right by the injector with a hammer. You'll be tapping the plastic retainer down off the injector. You'll see when you do it. The directions might seem convoluted, but the job isn't. What is holding the injector in the retainer is a brittle old seal that won't readily squish to allow the retainer to come off. So you have to help it just a bit with a hammer. Don't slam on it. Just finesse it. The Volvo plastic retainers are cheap from Groton. You may just want to use new ones, but it might not be necessary. If you use the PB Blaster the day before, it might be a little easier. All in all, it's not a difficult job. Good luck.

I'd double check before ordering seals. Most 1982 California-spec 240's had LH-Jetronic 1.0

no sweat, but i'd replace the injectors and holders, too. bosch say a kjet injector has a life of 100k miles. it's mechanical, springs get weak and the internals wear. the holders will be very brittle and won't cooperate. all you need is a 5mm allen, 12mm and 14mm wrenches. take the line off the injector, remove the allen and pull the injector holders out of the head. you'd be suprised at the idle and mileage improvements. good luck, chuck.

I don't know, maybe two or three hours? It depends on what you mean by "limited skills." And there's always Murphy's Law. With me, it seems that more often times than not there's something unpredictable that comes up, or I notice something else that I want to get to. So the simple jobs always take longer than I expect. My fiancee knows to double my time estimates for everything.

When you have the injectors off, consider doing a pressure flush. Running bottles of injector fluid through your tank won't come close to what you can do with a pressure flush. If you have an air compressor you can do it yourself (do a search for some tips), or take them to a shop. It's not that expensive and could really restore some power and fuel efficiency.

How exactly do you pressure flush the injectors with an air compressor? I'm planning on doing the seals on my '85 240 this weekend. Is it OK to buy the new seals at NAPA auto parts?

Thanks!
Dave

took me about 3hrs. in the dark. i decided to take all four injectors off at once and i removed the fuel lines with little trouble. then i took all injectors to the workbench and cleaned them as best i could and replaced all the seals. to remove the injectors from the plastic retainers i assembled too wheel chock pieces of timer laid flat and place the plastic retainer flat with the injector facing upwards. i lightly tapped the injector down with a rubber mallet. I STRESS LIGHTLY B/C YOU DON'T WANT TO BREAK THE DELICATE INJECTORS!

Unsure whether the idle has improved as i think i still have a little vacuum leak somewhere but i just cannot find the little bugger.

hope your installation is successful. the job is not that hard if the injectors pull straight out like mine did.

why would it take 2 to 3 hours?....i simply want to remove each injector....change the seals....and put it back...?

in my estimate that would take like 1 hour?

depends if you have the right tools. it is a little tricky to get the injector out from under manifold #3. unless you have a small ratchet or a screwdriver with ratched connection. plus, in the dark it takes a bit longer. plus if you are cleaning a lot of the gunk of everyhting properly it might take longer. 1hr is all the shop charges for labour but they are well equipped.
