Brake lights out 200 1989

All three brake lights are out on my '89 240DL. New fuses are in, new switch (on the pedal)is in. I played with the out-bulb (?) switch, th ered canister and the lights worked for a day. NoW they're off. I read where the canister rarely dies...? What do I do next?

Sounds like the bulb out relay. Remove the red cover and examine all the solder joints with a magnifying glass under a strong light. You can usually find the bad solder joint. Simply reflow the solder at the bad joint and you should be good to go- If not you should be able to find one used for a good price; they are rather expensive new.

if by canister you mean the bulb check relay, you are slightly wrong. usually, they fail exactly as you describe, no brake lights. have replaced a few for just that reason. good luck, chuck.
