tranny O/D gear prob 200

I have a -79 245DL wagon w/4 speed overdrive has a toggle switch. point:
the overdrive gear will not engage and popped in and out of O/D gear before it went out all together. is this a major tranny repair? or is this something I can do myself?

After checking the fuse, roll it in the clips to clean the ends check the following.

All are done with the auto stopped, ignition on, engine OFF, gear lever in 4th.

Listen for the solenoid on the left side of the OD to click as you slide the switch. No click. Pull the shift lever further to the rear and right. If this makes the solenoid click and wiggling the shift lewver does the same, change the 4th gear switch on the trany.

Under the auto, check in the following order by wiggling . Ground terminal on the solenoid. The yellow wire on the solenoid. follow that wire back and where it connnects to the 4th gear switch wiggle that. Wiggle the red wire on the switch.

The next requires a volt meter or 12 volt test lamp. If no voltage at a test point, replace the wire or the switch.

Under the auto, test for voltage at the red wire of the 4th gear switch. If none here, you will need to release some carpet and check at the connector under the right side of the tunnel. The blue wire is from the fuse to the switch. The other wire is to the 4th gear switch. With this connector disconnected, you will check the stalk switch for Ohms or continuity. Infinite Ohms or no continuity the wires to or switch itself is bad.

Back under auto to the 4th gear switch. If voltage at red wire, recconnect to the 4th gear switch and check the other terminal. Replace switch if no voltage through switch. Check at solenoid. Replace yellow wire. Check at ground terminal of solenoid. Remove ground terminal and check again. if now voltage, replace diode. No voltage with diode off, solenoid needs to be replaced.

Any other questions or findings, conntact me off list for more info.

Duane
