Loss of power after long warmup 200 1983

I've been chasing a problem in my '83 240Ti since summer and am running out of ideas. The car is a low mileage (40K mi.) B21FT Intercooled. Engine harness is new as are both fuel pumps, fuel filter and the coil was just replaced with a known good used one. Problem is the same in both 80 deg summer and 10 degree winter temps. The car runs great for 20-30 mi on the highway. I then experience a significant loss of power at part throttle. At WOT, the power seems to be there. I have picked up a air/fuel gauge but it's a little cold to play out in the garage. What components might take that long to warm up and start to act up, only to be fine after an extended cooloff period? Thanks

As an owner of a similar car, I know you want to keep it for a while. It might be worthwhile to invest in an inexpensive gauge for troubleshooting the k-jets.

I got one from JC Whipme a few years ago, but did not see it in their current paper catalog. If you look at the one in the link above, the description is correct, but the photo does not look like my kit. Here's a picture of what I received - definitely made for the VW/Porsche/Audi/MB/Saab/Volvo crowd. Anyone desiring a larger (1MB), readable version of this picture should use the envelope icon above and send me an email.

I personally am not convinced this would be a fuel problem. If the mixture became lean, you would be seeing signs like over heating, misfiring, spark plug condition indicating lean mixture. If the mixture were to rich you would see black smoke, a super heated catalyst, and black plugs. You might check the spark plugs for color to get a clue. Check the spark strength when cold and hot. Rev the engine to a specific RPM, like 3000, and see if the advance is the same.

I agree with porkface. Sounds like the CPR. You can open it up and check to see that the heater filament works when supplied 12V and that the lines are not plugged. Good Luck!

sounds like you need a set of fuel gauges to check the fuel and control pressure. usually, when the control pressure is too low, it starts great and goes way rich as the car warms. why-the control pressure doesn't rise as the temp does. or, if the control press is too high, it will never start cold, or it seems like forever, then when it warms and runs great. why-control press is too high for cold start. don't run out and buy a regulator on my say so, just a real possibility. have someone look at it with the right tools. good luck, chuck.
