Brake bleeder tool -- all 4 up off the ground? 200

I have read a recent post about IPD's brake bleeder tool (now on sale for 22USD).

I only have 2 jack stands.

1) Can I use the brake bleeder tool with only 2 wheels off the ground at one time. That is start doing the rear with rear wheels off the ground while front wheels are on the ground. Once reare is done, put reare back on ground, lift front off the ground and proceed with front. Is that alright to proceed like that? Or is it a requirement that all 4 wheels be off the ground at the same time?

2) Also of concern is that the brake booster. Is that true that with older mileage car there is a possibility to create a leak there if not done properly. Remember reading something about this on the Board. I believe brake fluid can leak internally passed a seal in the brake booster, so you don't see fluid missing from the reservoir or in your driveway. I think caused by lack of pressure when doing the flush. Any danger of that with the brake bleeder tool?

3) Where do you get the pressure from? In the FAQ it is mentioned you can use your spare emergency tire/wheel. Is that the way to do it?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Possible alterative-- 200

check out speedbleeder.com
Have talked to folks who love them. I have a set waiting to put on daughter's car, and ordered a set for my 88 Saab 9000.

Which size did you order for your 240?
I suppose you can always go back to the old valve if you don't like this system.
Seems simple enough the way they show it on their Web site.

Don't have them for the 240 (at least not yet)--that will probably get sold off in the spring, if my daughter actualy moves to NYC and sells her car to her mother at an outrageous price.

As I recall, there is pretty good info on the site to help you get the right ones. Otherwise, you can provide the info or call the 800 number.

The ones I ordered on Tues came yesterday.

Since it's so handy to have all 4 wheels off the ground, I would suggest going to an Autozone or Kragen and getting another pair of jackstands. They're not that expensive, and you can't use ramps in front for this type of thing since you need the front wheels off. It is so much easier to bleed the brakes with all 4 wheels off, especially since the bleeding sequence is so funky.

The IPD website says you get the pressure from a spare tire, about 20psi. I myself have the more expensive hand pump pressurising bleeder tool ($42) so have never used this one you have, but be careful no to over pressurize or you may ruin your master cylinder, I have never gone above 15psi with my bleeder and have been fine. that is just my opinion, but others may say you can go higher than 20psi without a problem.

I wouldn't worry too much about the brake booster, they don't really feel the brake bleeding process if you are using a pressure bleeder, now if you were pumping the pedal, then it would feel it.

use bricks if you need to, but not cynder blocks, those are notorious for failing and breaking, go with solid bricks on the back end, it is lighter than the front.

good luck

I've bled three cars so far with my new Motive Bleeder without going over 10 pounds pressure. Little slower but has worked fine.

Thanks Chuck.
I assume you mean red bricks, right?
Where should I place them when I lift the rear?
Thanks.

You people are sacring me. For Gods sake man go get another set of jack stands. There not that expensive and are better than a 4000 pound car sitting on your chest or worse on you head.

I was about to say the same thing.

At my local Autozone, they have a pair of 4-ton jack stands for $19.95.

Proper sequence for bleeding:

1. Left rear.
2. Left front, top.
3. Right front, top.
4. Right rear.
5. Right front, lowers, inside then outside.
6. Left front, lowers, inside then outside.

If you only have two stands, put the rear wheels up on solid blocks to make room to work. Put the front on stands and remove front wheels. Should work fine. Rears will be a bit of a pain to reach. Good luck.

Hi Doug,

Left is driver and right is passenger side?
What can I use as blocks? Where can I place them in the rear (what part of the car)?

Thanks.

Yes, left is the driver's side. Leave the back wheels on the car and get some 4x6 or 4x8 or 4x10 blocks of solid wood and put them under the rear tires. I suppose there are other places you could locate them, but I'd have to check. Even better would be 6-inch thick pieces. Contractors usually have cut-offs left over that are a couple feet long that they'll sell cheaply. Keep them around if you get good ones.
