Location of Demister Timer-Relay?? 200 1986

I'm headed off to the pic 'n pull later today. There's an '86 with the dash still intact.
-Does that year have the demister timer relay instead of the constant-on-or-off rocker switch of the earlier models?...and if so...
-Is the relay a separate piece (where?) or part of the switch assembly?

I'm planning to retrofit it to son's 81GL - any wiring issues?

I put an old on/off switch in my '87 which has the timer. If I turn the switch on, then off, the timer starts and eventually it goes off along with the light. I like this setup because I can turn the switch on and it stays on as long as I need. Plug 'n play switch for the cars with the timer.

I've got an extra rocker switch that came out of my car if you need one.

Thanks for the offer, Michae1. I've already got a few foglight, and heat seater and demister switches - and after tomorrow's (didn't make it there today) trip to the boneyard I may have some more!

And thanks to all for the advice. I'll post back after I attempt to retrofit the timer to the 81.

My 1983 did not come with the timer, but my 1984 does have it (wish it didn't); that's the changeover age.
I think the timer is built into the switch, but I'm not positive.

Our 83 244DL (rip) had the timed one as does the 84. My WDM says the timing relay is somewhere near the driver's feet with p/n 1324675. Has a red/yellow, two yellows, a blue and a black wire sticking out of it.

Thanks. Although your post is a couple of days old, the timing was good enough for me. The relay on the latest 240 in the family just quit. I'll get another tomorrow at the wrecking yard.

        Demister Timer-Relay connections. 200 1986

Nice idea - refitting the 1983 with this system. I like it. Mine is a 1986 244GL.

Art's description of the relay in his 1984 still the same in the 1986. Same wire colors.

Yellow-Red.........Relay terminal #86......goes to demist switch.
        Black..............Relay terminal #31......Ground somewhere
Yellow (2 wires)...Relay terminal #87......To rear window, to light on switch.
Blue...............Relay terminal #15......Fuse panel, on mine its fuse #11.

The relay is, I think, a 15 minute delay. when the key is off, it drops out and will not re-start without the switch being pushed again.

Which reminds me - the switch is different, get it too. Pushing it starts the relay and the light, the switch returns to the "off" positon. Light stays on for the delay time. Use the old switch, with light removed, as a power antenna "downer".

        Good luck,

        Bob

Art: many thanks for the p/n and the location of the relay. Sounds like there will be some wiring chores, but I'll pull one and see if I can make it work. Our 83 is early production (October 83) and does not have the timer-relay. When you turn the key on, the demister switch lights right up if you have left it on. I think a timer-relay switch has to be retoggled to reactivate the circuit once the ignition has been switched off?

"I think a timer-relay switch has to be retoggled to reactivate the circuit once the ignition has been switched off?"

Yes, and I like that, because otherwise I'd forget and the longer you have those foil traces heated the shorter they last. Using a Decora light switch modified with a spring return, I implemented the same theory with the bathroom exhaust fan.

Only problem with either is when you push it by accident - there's no turning the demister off when you're driving...
