Reccomendations wanted: What engine should I put in my '76 245? 200 1976

Thread title says it all.

Ideally I'd just put another B-21 in it, preferably one from an '80 (with the emissions control systems). I'd like to stick with K-jet, since I'm (somewhat) familiar with it.

I'm looking for an engine that would be easy to put in as well, which is why I'm not interested in a V-8 or Turbo conversion.

The M-46 is in good shape on the car, so I won't need to pull the tranny (but I will anyway when I remove the old engine).

What's the main difference between the later 240 engines? Is the fuel economy any better? I'm pretty sure they would bolt in okay, but I don't want to have to deal with a ton of electrical differences, or different FI systems.

Is there a list somewhere that shows what different engines were used in different years? I once saw one, but I don't remember where.

One last thing, I haven't gone engine hunting before, so if any one has any special tricks or "sources" for finding one, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks as always.

If I were in your situation, and given the no V8 and no turbo stipulation, I would acquire a 405 head from Canada with a K cam, and a B23 block from '83-'84 with 10.3:1 compression (works out to 10:1 with the 405 head). The 405 heads in Canada were only used on the B23E with k-jet, so it will work in your car. I know there's at least one for sale at the turbobricks board (forums.turbobricks.com).

At the very least, I would suggest a b23 block for the added displacement.

I'm not sure, but I think you can just switch out the block, and use the old head with all its attachments. So maybe any block, regardless of FI system, can be used.

    Depends where you are.

Ideally, for the easiest swap, another '76 B21F is easiest. Most any B21F will work, but unless you want to wire up Lambda, you'd probably want to use your existing emissions stuff.

However, if you are in/near Canada, consider the B23E. It is the most powerful non-turbo red block. All of the emissions bits, excepting Pulsair, match your '76. If you live in an emissions state, you are SOL on using a B23E.

If you are somewhere near Michigan, ask me about a donor car with a B23E.

"If you live in an emissions state, you are SOL on using a B23E."

Not necessarily true. I know someone who just passed MD emissions easily with a B21 running about 10.5:1 compression, H cam, a header, and k-jet. This is similar output to a B23E, but with a hotter cam and less displacement.

Latter ones had the lambda sond, which may not work out on your '76. So you may want to avoid those. Early ones had the air injection pump ... prolly don't want those either (or just bypass it). So with that in mind, '78-79 is the happy medium.

Pluck one from a wrecked car ... they had to have been running to have crashed. Also, it might not hurt to ask around iPd if any of those guys know of some good ones laying around.
