Vapor Lock? 1800 1972

We are having trouble with our P1800ES. After the car warms up the engine will quit. When we try to re-start the engine, it will not turn over. Does anyone know what this could be and or what to do about it.

Thanks
Thomas

Won't turn over while warm? No crank? That would have to be primary electrical.
Resistance goes way up when wires are hot. If your alternator is marginal, it might be supplying just enough to keep things running. Batteries recover somewhat when allowed to rest.
If you mean "it won't fire" then I agree with prior post: Water temp sensor in right font side of head. Short in this circuit makes it go full rich, causing flooding and impossible warm start. Tailpipe smell like gas?

F.I. coolant temp. sensor, in the front, RH, of the head.
I'm assuming that it will, in fact, turn over, but won't start.

If it's not one of the sensors and it truely is vapor lock than you are probably missing the fiber washers that insulate the injecter mounts from the heat of the head. I had vapor lock problems and this was the cause. It is a common problem when your mechanic is not familiar with these cars and throws those little washers out or replaces them with metal. There should be eight of them. They go under and over the mount to prevent contact with the head and the bolt. Thickness is important so buy ones that are made for your car. If you replace these you will also need new seals for the mounts. These seals are not usualy in the injector seal kits so you need to buy them separately. Although I do sugjest getting the the seal kit too since you will have the old ones out anyway and most of the time they are dried up and need replaced anyway.

        Thad,
I found those washers in the head gaskets and seals kit I bought a while ago, and have been going around scratching my head over where they belong. I thought they might go with the injectors, but when I had the injectors apart, I found nothing like them in there. So, your post was very timely for me. Just to make sure I understand you right; one of them should go below the injector mount where the O ring also goes, and the other between the injector body and the aluminum mount?

O.K., now I get it. They go on top of and under the injector mounts where the bolts go through. Oh well, what can I say . . . .
