No.
Anyone else remember that "lucky brokedown" guy that started the thread "Why are volvo 240s such a piece of crap?" or something like that?
I think that got about 70+ responces.
What an idiot he was.
EDIT: 73 responces. Here's a link to that thread:

We own seven, all good driving cars. The fleet should not be that large, and I need to sell three. The extra cars have been accumulated because they were for sale cheap, and needed repairs. I have bought them inexpensively, repaired them inexpensively, and then I make a few dollars on the sale. There are four drivers in the household.

I only own 3 Volvos, and will probably be hanging on to them. I'm not looking to add any more right now since they are keeping my hands full. (2 of them are project/restoration vehicles) I haven't owned any other Volvos except these 3, and if I ever get married I'll have a pair of "His & Hers" coupes, plus the Wagon.
'87 240 Wagon, Blue, 231,000 miles. My faithful daily driver. I'm fighting the rust as best I can and I'll be changing out the front spring mounts shortly (common rust item here in Michigan). The rocker panels under the doors are starting to show some rust holes and I'm planning on welding new covers on them at some point.
'88 780, Black, PRV-6, 144,000 miles. I bought this car on eBay in September 2003. She's in great condition, but needs a few things here and there. About 1/3 of the Air Dam is missing, and I'm trying to address some light rust on the undercarriage before it becomes an issue. Engine runs strong and smooth, but I'm still looking for a backup Fuel Pressure Regulator and Bosch 006 Air Mass Meter before she sees any serious road travel. The 006 AMMs are as rare as hen's teeth.
'89 780, Black, Turbo, 94,000 miles. This 780 was bought at the same time as the '88 and from the same charity used car lot (eBay) but for significantly less. The car was hit hard on the rear driver's side and has some sheetmetal damage that I'm trying to repair. The Air Dam was completely ripped off, front seats are cracked, and I'm also looking for both tail light assemblies and front turn signals.
If you're interested in buying a 780, they pop up on eBay quite frequently and typically sell at amazingly low prices (most people are searching for 740s or 760s). At the moment, both of my 780s are not registered while I have them off the road for restoration work. Here in Michigan, annual registration fees are based on the selling price of the vehicle when new. Needless to say, the cost of registering a pair of $40,000 vehicles is more than what I pay in auto insurance in an entire year.
If you'd like to see some pictures of the cars, feel free to follow the links below. I don't have any current pictures, just the '88 eBay photos, and the pics of the '89 that the salesman emailed me after I won the auction for the '88.

Thanks Don. The seller has had that 006 AMM posted for a few months now, but it's a bit more than I'm willing to spend. There was an '88 760 that came through my local salvage yard (U-Wrench-It) about a year ago, and I could have bought the 006 AMM for $35 back then. Unfortunately, the yard has a very high turnover rate and a lot of good parts (and cars) go to the crusher before they can be decently recycled. If I'd known that I would eventually own a 3rd gen PRV-6 Volvo, I would have pulled a lot of parts to have as backups, etc. (but I did grab two of the 15" Omega wheels before it got crushed)
God bless, and thanks for the heads-up.
Fitz Fitzgerald.

If I wasn't in grad school and living in an apartment, I would be building my own Volvo farm.
You must spend a small fortune in registration fees and insurance. Do all of those cars need yearly inspections?
Take care,
Keith
|
|
-

No yearly inspection. Registrations are $26.50 each. I found an insurance policy which covers me, liability only, for anything I care to drive, for $500 a year. So about $700/year covers it. The hard part is deciding what to drive to work in the morning ;-)

Heh, I've been there before a couple of times.
I once accidentally left the lights on in my wagon... The buzzer that usually goes off didn't for some reason (I think the fuse was dead, or the door switch wasn't working.)
Anyway, I was fortunate enough to have parked on a downward angle, and there wasn't a car ahead of me. Releasing the parking brake, and getting the car moving, I was able to jump start the thing.
I've also done this in my Dad's '77 244 once though... The '77 doesn't have a buzzer that goes off when you leave the lights on. Unfortunately, my dad's is an auto, so I wasn't able to jump the clutch.

1979 (not *positive*) green 242 (sold just before buying the 244)
1989 blue 244 GL
2000 white S40
*I* only own the one pictured in my profile, a wonderful and beautiful 1989 244 GL.
My mom owns the white 2000 S40.
My mom has always been the primary driver of the Volvos. She drove mine until late 2000 or early 2001, at which point she got her next Volvo.
Interesting story about my car: my parents tell me that when they went to the dealership to look at the new Volvos (I'm pretty sure we test-drove a 740 with a moonroof), they mentioned to the salespeople that they were thus ready to sell the old car. Before leaving the dealership that day, the secretary had agreed to buy the 242 off of them.

3 in the family, 2 are mine.
My current fleet:

My '76 245 (280K miles on the odometer) and my '80 245 (423K miles).
The '76 has a blown engine, which I plan on replacing really soon. Everything else in that car is perfect. Even the interior is in good shape (except for that horrible smell of cigarettes... damn smokers!)
The '80 is on it's original engine, and second transmission. Still going strong as ever.
My dad also drives a '77 244 (not pictured above.)
Family has previously owned the following Volvos:
'79 264 (Sold because of the dreaded 6 cylinder engine. A really nice ride otherwise.)
'89 245 (Sold because of non stop electrical/computer problems... Now my guess is that it had a bad ECU. Oh well.)

1994 945T - 121k miles
Wife's car, mostly highway miles since we got it 18 months ago w/83k miles.
1980 242GT - 92k miles
Rust free 3 season car. Garaged for winter with a busted LF fender from this summer...going to be fixed soon.
1987 245DL - 235k miles
My rusty, trusty winter beater that I picked up for cheap with a nice set of Virgos (new tires!) to be used on my GT (the ones on there aren't as nice). Well maintained drivetrain w/rust in the usual places and then some. Failed RI state inspection for LF ball joint, rusty floor boards, and high NOx (4.28, limit 3.25).

1992 745T - 125k miles
1980 242GT - 170k on the broken odometer.

My '80 245 DL is the car that inspired my family to buy Volvos first place. It was our first Volvo. Other cars have come and gone, but the '80 remains, and is now mine.
We got the car with around 98K miles in about '88 or '89. (I was really young at the time.) My father started racking up miles at a crazy rate in the mid 90's, and now it has 423K.
I'm never going to get rid of the '80. It's still rust free, if you can believe it! It's really dirty, but no rust under the dirt!

Your cars look great, the '80 looks just like my '80 (except mine is the dark green) they even both have the roofrack. Can't tell from the picture whether your '80 also has the chrome trim over the wheelwells. My wagon came with this added trim, I do not see it very often on other 240's. The Green Bean was bought from Jim Fisher Volvo and was one of three 240's in the display area inside. I almost got the maroon wagon they had but it was an automatic and I had always driven manual transmissions. My younger daughter almost came home from the hospital in this car, she was three months old when I got the car. I can understand how you feel about keeping your car, you have grown up with it. I now have got my very nice '92 back from my daughter, it is in better shape than my '80 is my favorite. If I ever had the opportunity to by a nice '93 Classic, the '92 would be the one that I would sell.

I think the wagon has the chrome trim... I think it's pealing now though.
Speaking of extra chrome, I replaced the side view mirrors with a pair of chrome ones from an earlier 240 on the '80, and I must say I like them a lot better. If you have the chance to do the same in your '80, I suggest you go for it. Bigger mirror, better view, and they stay in place a lot better then the old plastic ones do.
Plus, they just make the car look more like a classic... if that's at all possible. Heh heh heh...
My wagons are also standard trannys. M-46s. My Dad's 77 on the other hand...

I have from time to time thought about doing this. I did replace the plastic ones a couple of months ago, the plastic part was OK, but the mirror part was not at all good looking (comes from the car living outside for its whole 24 years I suppose.) I managed to replace them OK, but how easily do the chrome ones go in, are the fittings different? If I remember correctly they just attach from the outside only? If I had a lead on a pair do they require special hardware that needs to come with them?

It's pretty easy to put them on. Just remember to grab those plastic triangles that go on the inside of the car.
I'll take some pictures for you. It's a very very easy swap.

Thanks, I would appreciate that. One thing I learned from swapping out the other mirrors is to be really careful with the washers, I lost one of them down the inside of the door panel, luckily I had a spare from the one I was swapping in. I will keep an eye out for a pair of the chrome ones to come up on ebay, I have seen them from time to time.

Six 240s an 850T-5 and a 780 all rustfree, with working AC and no real mechanical needs. Nice cars, I mean. And maybe another 3 or 4 on the self. But three of them are away at college.
