K&N Air filter 1800

I replaced the old air filter box on my '73 1800ES with a direct manifold mounting K&N air filter from IPD about a year ago. I did his by first removing it and then cutting the box off of the pipe that attaches to the flexible pipe, and then through the wall behind the grill. I then attached the K&N to this pipe out side of the engine compartment behind the grill. Now my question, is it possible that the K&N air filter is sucking up rain as I'm driving?

K&N Air filter 1800

I have htis set up in my P1800ES with no adversre effects, the filter being oil soaked repels the water. I had the same concern as you oringinally so I shot the filter with the hose conected to a shop vac(to simulate the engine. Not a drop got by. I do reccomend re-oiling more frequently than K&N reccomends though(cheep insurance)

Have fun

K&N Air filter 1800

Colin,

There is a K&N that some people put right on the intake manifold.

I'm NOT suggesting that mounting location, for obvious reasons, but I did want to point out that the same size filter that fits on the intake manifold throat also fits right on the air filter box, in place of the boxes intake "snorkel". That would probably stop most water from getting any further than the empty air filter box.

Any negative to this mounting location? Thinking of the swirling in that empty air filter box now makes me wonder if that setup negatively affects anything having to do with air delivery.

Don't worry about it. I've got a great big K&N sticking out in front of the radiator, right behind the grill. I've driven this in torrential rain. No doubt it sucks up some water, but it doesn't hurt a thing. Maybe it's even good -- sort of a poor man's water injection system.
