help with fault code, 89 GL 200

Hi all, I bought a 89GL and it has fuel inj. problems. I checked fault codes & it came up 2-2-1. The book says fuel system compensating for extremely rich or extremely lean air/fuel mixture at cruise. I can smell the rich mix coming out of the exaust. What can be the problems.
Thanks, Robbie

help with fault code, 89 GL 200

according to my factory manual published 3/93, 221 is a code for lean conditions at partial loads. before looking for anything real, make sure the hose from the mass meter is intact. then just pull the fuse by the battery and wait a bit. this will reset the adaptation in the ecu. if you get 221 again, then there is a problem. i will tell you, i have repalced a coupla ecus that threw codes for no apparent reason. that's why i always reset first and wait. if another code comes back, then reset again. if 221 comes back, then let's chase it. good luck, chuck.

It might be the fuel pressure regulator. Pull off the vacuum line on it and smell for gas. These usually fail causing a rich running condition. Easy to replace $40 or so depending on where you get it. Good luck Dan

Had the same code last year.... 200

replaced my FPR, which fixed the problem. Also I had to replace the igntion wires...not sure why they were shot (taught me a lesson not to buy stuff from Pep Boys).

Hope this helps
