restoration project on '72 145 140-160

Considering getting a 145 with 120k miles on it for $500. It still runs but very poorly. Originally purchased in Sweden but it has alot of problems. First, the whole roof is caved in from carrying something very large and heavy. Oil leaks needs about a quart a week. The fuel injection was taken out and switched for a carbuerator 20 years ago and has ran really bad since. Besides all the normal things that need replaced for a 32 year old car, are these things worth getting the car? Would I be able to fix the roof, switch it back to fuel injection and do something about the oil leak. This would be my first project car. I don't have and extreme amount of $$$ for this but am trying to save this brick from getting wasted on someone who does not care about Volvo or sent to the junkyard.

thanks,

My guess is that the low adquisition cost will be totally eclipsed by the several Ks you would be spending to get this bow-wow into usable condition. It will be cheaper to pay twice or three times as much for a car that doesn't need major body work and has a functioning fuel delivery system -- be it carb or FI. They are out there, just keep on looking a while longer.

Thank you very much for your help with making the decision. I am very grateful for your advice. I think this time I will pass on this one.

      Thanks again,

Sounds to me like the only reasonably good thing about this car is the price.
There are enough 145s out there that you should find another one. The FI
replacement will be $$$$ unless you can find a good donor car (and if you can,
you should probably buy it instead).

The roof is one of the principal structural members on those cars, btw.
