Cruise control at higher speeds 200 1989

I don't use cruise control much on my 244, and I think I'm even less likely to use it now that I've found it doesn't seem to want to set at higher speeds.

While driving on the interstate last week, I pulled out of a group of cars and so I was ready to set the cruise control and let the car do the work up and down the gently rolling hills I was in. However, it wouldn't stay at my speed, which was just over 80mph. I'd slide the switch to the "On" position and press the "Set" button on the end of the turn signal indicator, but the car would coast well below the speed at which I had set the cruise control. I didn't let it slow down enough to find out what the highest speed it would cruise at, but it was definitely under 75mph.

Is there a hidden upper limit that cruise control will set itself at, or does this problem just sounds like one that comes with age?

It's not big deal, as the hills were probably too steep for cruise control to adequately compensate for (at times I was going from coasting to nearly full throttle; horrible gas mileage, I know) and I like being in complete control of the car, especially at faster speeds, but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced any problems like mine.

Cruise control at higher speeds 200 1989

I have yet to attempt to set my cruise control at higher than 70mph. However, I am not aware of any built-in limit. This is both on my 1986 240 and my 1988 240, which have the same system.

Since the system uses manifold vacuum to operate the throttle, I would suspect that if the manifold vacuum was inadequate to hold the pedal that far down one would see the same symptoms.

Check the hoses for split ends and leaks. In the engine bay the line from the engine brings vacuum to a tee, one branch to the servo unit (has a wiring harness to it) and the other to a vacuum storage/buffer tank right next to the servo. The line from the servo goes to a tee in the cabin.

the vacuum line coming in from the engine bay goes into the driver's side, there into a tee. One branch goes to the gas pedal actuator and the other to the vacuum switch on the brake pedal. There's another branch to the clutch if your Volvo is manny tranny.

At higher engine speeds the manifold is reduced. If you find no leak, I suppose that at that level of vacuum that's the way it works.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

Cruise control has a minimum speed of 30 mph and a max. or 90mph.
