Radio, 'ceiling cloth' 700

I'm hoping for help with two minor problems:
1. The lighted display on the radio doesn't work, and neither do the "selector buttons." The radio does still play. Could there be an internal fuse out or something>

2. The cloth ceiling liner is drooping over the backseat. No edges are loose, but it looks like it just came unglued from the ceiling. Anyone have a relatively easy way to fix this?

You're better off replacing the headunit with a new one before trying to fix the old one. It's not to bad of a job, but you will have to cut into the harness since there's no adapters available for the 700 (at least not worth using). Your front dask speakers run off the radio, front and rear door speakers run off an amp located under the drivers knee panel. This is tru for most of the 90 and 91s I've seen, may be slightly different on older one.

The headliner needs replaced, and it's not a fun job to do. This is especially true if you have a sunroof. If it's not a big deal, you can get some 'buttons' from an autoparts dealer like an Autozone. They're in that Helpme or whatever brand section of replacement parts. They're black plastic screw-like things which you twist in.

Otherwise, check out the 700/900 FAQ. If you do have a sunroof, only use 1/8" fom acked material...not the 1/4" stuff that's common in domestic cars. I actually found a nice light grey material to do mine, and redyed the ivory trim to a light grey. Matches the black intrior better in my opinion. If you do go this rout, make sure you only use the good 3m professional headliner spray adhesive. You'll be glad you did in the long run, even though it costs 2x as much.

The LCD panel isn't a typical bulb behind the glass arrangement. I found that on my '89 765 Turbo I'm better off living with the dark display until I decide to replace the unit with an upgrade. It would probably be as expensive to fix the light as it would be to replace with a nice after market unit.

Besides, after you've had the car a while, don't you know where the presets are by feel anyway?

    1. Sounds like the radio has a minor failure. No fuse controls specifically those functions.

    2. New headliner. The thin foam layer that's between the fabric and the hardboard is crumbling. The only practical solution is to remove the old headliner and glue a new one to the hardboard.

IPD sells a "diy" kit and has instructions for this repair posted on their Web site.

This same thing is happening to my '91.
