Rear defroster 200 1980

Hi Board-

My rear defroster doesn't work. I have 12V+ to the elements in the glass, but nothing more.

Not enough current? Maybe I should check the amp draw through the thing... can anyone provide a spec? What about resistance across the elements, what should that be?

Many thanks-

In addition to Miguel's excellent trouble-shooting procedure below, pull the switch out of the console and check for burned contacts at the wiring plug. This is probably not the cause if you do have a full 12V at the grid +ve side, but it's a quick check.

Troubleshooting 200 1980

Hi Kyle
The voltage end to end of the elements should be 12v
here is how to check the individual filiments
the voltage from one end to the middle of each element
should be 6v...if it is 12v the filiment is open between
the end you're checking against and if it is 0v the filiment
is open to the other end.
ASCII art follows

GOOD
<-gnd>-/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/<+12v>
______6v____

Case1
<-gnd>-/\/\ \/\/\/\/\/\/\/<+12v>
_____12v____

Case2
<-gnd>-/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ \/\/<+12v>
______0v____

you can check the current by pulling the fuse and putting an
ammeter in line...or pulling the connection to the grid and
doing the same.

If you have a bunch of broken traces the current will be low
because the overall resistance of the circuit will be higher.

broken traces can be fixed (in theory) with special paint...
I have never done this though. Auto parts stores sell a kit.
