hello,

i have had my 1981 240 for about 8 months. and yesterday, when i started it and tried to go down the street it would not shift to 2nd, tried to runit and it wouldn't, then after i run the engine to high RPM it did shift and it wouldn't have a problem after that. then it did it again today (every time the car starts cold)

i tried letting the car warm up before i take it out, checked the trans oil. but don't know what could it be or how to make it run again.

Please Help.

    Change the fluid first. If there is any water in the tranny it will separate from the transmission fliud and freeze in one location or another. I had a problem with a car that did that until I changed the fluid. Also auxiliry transmission coolers are great for warm weather and towing but cause problems in below zero weather. If you have one (most Volvos don't) cover it with cardboard to block the wind.

    I'd say it's a mis-adjusted clutch cable. If it's not tight enough, then when the clutch is cold it won't fully disengage, therefore making the shifting tough. It might be old fluid too, might want to just change it anyways (not too tough).

        Hi Chargerucd,

        You may try "Lucas Transmission Fix" ($7.99, Autozone).

        I have tried this product for my 88 240DL. It works great and you can feet the difference immediately.

        Thanks God! It saves me a lot of money as compared to have someone fixed it mechanically.

          Hello,

          Yes, i was thinking about doing the oil and filter change and definitely add the lucas oil additive after that,
          we'll see how it works.
