Speedo Cable Lube 200 1978

Either the speedo or the tach is making a nice... sound, it seems to be coming from the speedo. Was suggested by someone to lube the speedo cable. Never having done that, I thought I'd ask and see what that involves? 78 242GT with the GT Sport dash. Any help would be appreciated. I suppose removing the dash could be one way, but if there is an easier way, that'd be great to learn.

On a second note while I might have your attention, I am looking for a part, the plastic insert in the sport dash that has the Brake Failure, Turn signal, OD, etc pieces. Apparently this one is a shade melted or warped, need to replace that. Thanks to anyone who might have one for sale.

I have never disassembled my Volvo cable but have lubed plenty of British speedo cables. Typically, the speedo end of the cable (not the sheathing or cable housing but the cable itself) has a squared off end. By disconnecting the other end of the cable at the transmission, you can usually (again, the Brits like to do things differently!) just slide the cable out of its sheathing. I have then cleaned the old cable and applied a generous coating of light grease (I want to say molybdenum disulfide grease but don't hold me to that - its been a long time since I looked at the container). It might even be possible to do this with the cable still in the car but I normally do it on the work bench.

Thanks very much for the words of advice. I'll give that a shot when I've got it up to do the wheel bearings next week. J
