Dear miracleman49,
May this find you well. First, make sure you have enough power steering fluid. over time, the power steering hoses become porous, and fluid leaks out. Assuming that the power steering reservoir is full (to the point marked on the dipstick), check the power steering pump drive belt (lower left corner of the engine, as you face it).
The power steering pump drive belt, may be glazed and/or slipping.Check the belt's tension (it should depress 3/8", when you press on it with a finger).
If it depresses more than that, re-tension it. The power steering pump bolts can be eased, and the belt tightened by using a tensioner (a rod with "c" shaped plates at either end, one of which fits against each pulley, and a screw adjustment in the middle to lengthen/shorten the overall rod length).
If the belt is properly tensioned, inspect the inner surface of the belt - that which goes against the pulley - to see if it is shiny. If so, put a bit of motor oil on it. This is counter-intuitive, but it will help the belt to grip.
If the belt has cracks in it, replace it at once. If a belt has cracks in it, the rubber has deteriorated, and the belt will break. You will lose power steering.
Finally, if the re-tensioned belt soon works loose, check the power steering pump mounting bushings. They may be damaged, and so need to be replaced.
I hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
spook
