More on 561/951 ECU swaps, the 571 is good 200 1989

I tried out a 0 280 000 571 from a 16 valve 740 today, in my '91 245 (K cam, AW 70, Normally running a 951 ECU) and it was just fine as far as I could tell on a 10 mile run. I also found a white label 561 ECU in a salvage yard (most are pink label) that might represent a replacement ECU that was past-fix by Volvo/Bosch.
I think a 556 (California LH 2.4) might work OK as well in my 245, but I have not tried.

My ECU table there is going to get rolled into the FAQ - though I'll dig out the original and make any changes that people suggest - it was hard-coded initially when I had some spare time and a bad ECU a few years back.

The 556 should work fine. I think Art mentioned that the 933 was the newer of the EGR computrs for LH2.4 which is as I remember it -- I had a couple of CA models. They work OK for non-CA version cars also; the EGR functions are naturally just not used. Also as I recall, the non-EGR computers will work in the EGR cars, but of course the EGR becomes nonfunctional.

Does using a non EGR computer in an EGR car set a CEL? How about the EGR computer in a non EGR car? I'd think the latter scenario more likely to trip the light, as there'd be a circuit looking for a system and not finding it.

The EGR unit in a non-EGR car is no problem, at least that I can see. I do not have an EGR car to test to converse, but if I had to guess, I'd say no CEL, maybe.

Bob,

That's good news about the 571. I'll keep my eye out for a GLE but someone has been getting all the ECUs first lately.

I agree the 556 should work fine too. Someone doing work for the PO used a 933 in my 89 245 49-state (no EGR) and it worked for at least two years with no surprises when I put a 561 back in. I understand the 933 is to a 556 as a 951 is to a 561-- I think FCP Groton lists it that way too. The California model looked alike except for the extra circuitry for the EGR controller.

Bob, What year was the 740? I have a'90 240 and it has the original ECU.My local boneyard has a bunch of 740s.I think I might buy a back-up brain.

Sorry, I meant to say it was an '89 740 16V as I recall.
