86 to 93 WINDSHIELD UPGRADE 200

The frame of my 86 sedan is curling at the base of the drivers side and I can't seem to get it to stay down anymore. I've priced the replacement windshield from the 93 with SAFELITE glass company at about $220. They say the windshield comes with the new frame moulding. My question is, I just had the car painted last year and the paint shop masked off to the edge of the rubber gasket of my windshield frame and it was a good mask. Is the width of the new moulding/gasket the same width and what is the chance of the paint peel/chip off when the old gasket is removed. Anyway of preventing this problem if it does exist?

I was over to a friends yesterday, he has an '86? 240 with a '91 Windshield, it seemed to me that the gasket on the NEWER glass is just slightly wider than on the old-style (my '89). As to how to get the old out without tearing the paint off, draw a line around the old gasket with a razor blade, right at the edge of the old gasket to break the paint.

Someone please correct me here, but I *think* the "new" glass is a DIY job.

The aftermarket might be a little smaller in gasket coverage than the OEM Volvo windshield not sure. I have heard that the old style windscreen when replaced with a new type (aftermarket? all?) might leave a paint gap. Anyway, that is why a glass-out paint job is the way to go and really is not much more work. I had no trouble installing a '93 windshield in the '83 242 using the automotive sealing urethane in a caulk gun. Two guys (too distracting with a woman helping) are a must but it went great and no leaks. Just clean out most old sealant, run a bead (~3/8" as I recall) and drop the new in. Do not forget the little support rubber pieces at the bottom of the glass. And do not get too aggressive banging on the glass to seat it.

The install I saw was OE glass, so that's maybe a difference.
