central locking system short? 200 1993

Anyone:
My battery drains overnight. My mechanic says it's the locking system relay. The number 8 fuse needs to be taken out when I park the car which is for the locking circuit. It could be a number of thing, but is there anyone out there who has had a simular problem? Please advise.
Thanks
Shep in Indiana

The central locking switch unit in the driver's door frequently fails. The failure mode is to 'engage' the locking solnoid, so a healthy current is being drawn continuously (thereby draining the battery). Erratic behavior when using the key in the driver's door to engage the central locking is a prime tipoff. The best cure is to simply replace the switch unit. A new one is about $85 from Volvo, or maybe find one in a boneyard and see if it works.

For both of you I'd first have a look inside the driver's door, to see if there's a problem with the lock button linkage bent or binding.
The driver's door is a manual lock, and has no lock motor. The rod has a switch in the middle of it, kind of a black cylindrical thing, that detects a pull or push of the lock knob. IF it's stuck in the on position, it'll be running the lock motors constantly. However, I would think that this would cause the doors to either re-lock themselves as soon as you let go of the key or button- or to force themselves open, making it impossible to lock. You didn't mention these problems, so possibly it is just confined to the relay.

Mine does it too - any adivce? central locking system short? 200 1988

Mine does it too, usually only when it's cold outside. I used process of elimination to figure out that it's the circuit with central locking that is draining. I'd like info on this problem as well. Greg
