Paint question 700

Does anybody know of a really good source that can give me directions to approach my first car paint job. I really do not want to have a shop paint my car (no money) so if I can do it myself, that would be great. The paint job is not an immediate thing either (next year or two hopefully). If there are any good books or internet sites, I would love to know about them. Heck, if somebody just wants to tell me how to do it, that would be cool too. Thanks

To be honest with all the money spent in prep, primer and paint not to mention the tools like compresser with good water/oil seperation might set you back just as much as having a pro squirt the car after you do the filling and priming. I wouldnt take it to a Maaco or other taxi refinishing shop instead would look to a real pro whos been doing in since puberty and still has his marbles upstairs. Ive seen some really good jobs come from shops that do the PPG system along with others who use HVLP guns and the like, Ive also seen some really crappy jobs come out of shops who use the same stuff but have no experience. Same with Maaco shops but most of them will only spray the car after they have completly prepped the body and masked everything. Prep is everything. 90% into smoothing, cleaning, priming and wet sanding to get the surface ready to actually hold the finish and the other 10% is actually coloring the car with the finish coat. Getting the paint viscosity correct is where real experience comes into play and this is where the balding and somewhat overweight body knocker comes into the light.

I know what the no money thing is all about and who knows maybe in a few years your fortune may turn to the sky and the good paint job wont be so far away. Haste makes waste so take your time and be proud of it.

Look on eBay for aout paint..you can get a whole kit (even includes the overalls)to paint your car with a good assortment of colors for about $160 plus shipping. You'll need to rent a compressor and paint gun. Did this and my 83 245 now looks like a pure white rolling refrig.
    Buena suerte,
