Harmonic Balancer 200 1985

Looks like I need a new one. Where can I get a Volvo balancer without going to the dealer? Thanks Dan

swedishengineering.com is an independent shop that sells parts mail order parts. I have received good OEM prices from them. They offer both Volvo and aftermarket parts. If there is a good aftermarket brand they will offer it. You will have to call them. Ask for Philip. At least go the website and read their article about Jarrod Stenberg.

There was a post a while back about a person buying an aftermarket HB and the counter-hold tool wouldn’t work in the slots.

I have had good luck with www.borton.com for all of my factory Volvo parts purchases. Their prices were great and they shipped the parts quickly. You can also E-mail them at:parts@borton.com.

    Dan,

I'm not confident with the cheaper ones. See my response to Hardknocks about 15 posts down, at "Crankshaft Pulley FAQ ? 200".

Especially if you have vibration concerns as I did. I can' t say the cheapies wouldn't have worked as well, but I don't have the confidence they last as long as OE.

For the 940, my cost with VCOA discount and free shipping was $145.60 from Beechmont Volvo in Cincinnati. It was worth it to me for the peace of mind that comes from known quality and long life.

I called a couple of local dealers, one is $245 + tax the other $165 +tax. I guess thats not too bad compared to the price you got. Dan

        Dan,

The $165 sounds about right. Do the other guys wear masks?

I forgot to say the my philosophy on OE may be age-based. I've done the P-n-P thing for over 20 years, and will do more.

But for things like Harmonic Balancer — for a car I plan to keep — I want something that may outlast me.

When I bought my first 240, a 5 speed 87 245, the pulley was completely separated, the rubber completely gone. I picked up a used replacement from a friend who has a junkyard, and got the car going. The very next week the local pick-n-pull got in a 740 with a brand new genuine Volvo unit, for $10.

I still have the first one I bought as a spare. Come to think of it, I have no idea why I didn't keep the new one when I sold the car.

Pick and pulls are pretty picked over in this area, unless you go routinely the chances of getting what you need are pretty slim.

I take it the $65 scan tec or MTC are not a good choice.

It is strange how one Volvo dealer gets $70 more than another.

          Thanks Dan
