Determining Which Wire Harness 200 1983

I have a 1983 GL. I have found a wiring harness locally, I think. But looking at the Dave Barton site (where this harness apparently came from), there are two possible ignition wiring harness; one with a round and one with a rectangular connector. What does that connector connect to? How do I know which one I need before taking my old one off? My local source says that because I have an ECU on my passenger side it will definitely be the same as the one he has-that it is the Chrysler ignition. But the distributor cap I took off and replaced was the red-orange color (but I put on a greyish Borg Warner cap that fits and works).

Related question: is replacing an ignition wiring harness something I can and should do myself? Or hire it done for an hour of shop time?

Determining Which Wire Harness 200 1983

hi there i found me a upgraded harness last week at the junkyard. it took me 1 hour to remove the harness and i was not concerned with being careful of parts i removed to get the harness out. i labeled it as i went. before i pulled this harness i would have been very hesitant to do the swap. but now i i feel confident to do the swap. i would change the two rubber hoses back by the firewall for the heater core. i would also remove the intake manifold to do the job. i would guess at least 8 to 10. hours for the job. i heard a experienced mechanic can do it in 2 or 3 hours. one mechanic quoted me three hundred to three hundred fifty dollars just for labor. good luck.

My son did his harness and I did mine (both 81 K-Jets) without any previous experience with wiring harnesses. Basically you are unplugging and pulling out old wiring, cleaning up everything, and installing and plugging in the new harness. Label everything as you unplug. There are a few problems that come up, and it does take some time. I don't think a shop could do a careful job in one hour like you mention. Maybe, but it sounds really fast to me. On our K-Jets we had the intake off when we did the job which made access much better. Good luck.

AS a supplement to this message: Is the WHITE Chrysler distributor cap the screw-on cap, and the RED Bosch distributor cap always a clip on? And if so, does the system with the clip-on cap ALWAYS have the 25a fuse on the driver's side (American)? If so, then I know which ignition harness I need, and I hereby suggest that to distinguish these two systems instead of referring to distributor cap COLOR, they be referred to by clip on/screw on (because my borg-warner cap is greyish in color).

I believe that the round vs square connector is the one for the distributor. IIRC my 1983 245GL n/a had the round one, and it connected to a harness that was very short, ran from the distributor about 6 inches to the opposite round connector.

It's been some years since I looked at that, so my statement is subject to correction.

The 25A fuse is part of the LH fuel injection FI system.

      Good Luck,

      Bob

PS Later B230F engines have the flame trap system mounted above the #3 and #4 rails on the intake manifold. In the older models that space is pretty much filled with the wiring harness - that''s where it "submerges" to below the I-manifold. IF you are going to replace the main harness, (1) it's easier if the I-manifold is off the block and moved towards the fender, and (2) consider installing the newer PCV and flame trap system. Get all new parts, the taller breather box and all the hoses, and enjoy the high mount trap location.

I am contemplating ONLY doing the "ignition" wiring harness; assuming that is what ties in to the ignition coil on the driver's side and, I'm told, the ECU on the passenger side. It runs down below the intake manifold and disappears (when viewed from above, at least).

I tried it...and couldn't finish it. I did what I could. I removed the upper and lower intake form the motor. All of the A/C stuff (because it no longer worked) and hoses. I got most of the harness in, but couldn't get the engine block drivers side harness to fit. It was too short and needed to go UNDER the fuel injection unit. Laying it over or behind would have been perfect. I plugged in as much as I could and had a shop finish it. $400 down the drain. When I got the car back and it has never ran right. I spent 2 years of spare time trying to figure out what went wrong. Starts up perfect, idles perfect, runs smooth, but will stall out when I put it in gear. I turned the idle way up to abut 1800rpm. It's the only way to keep it from stalling. It's parked in the garage for now. I'm thinking of a 5.0 v-8 conversion now. Cutting into a good harness will make it a little easier than the old melted mess from before.

Hi Ben. your situation of getting everything done and then it chugs out when in gear sounds just like my experience with my '83. Very frustrating until I found out about all the timing marks needing to be line up with a new timing belt. There are several places the timing marks must align perfectly when you put the new belt on. At least three places. Also a new belt tensioner would be a good idea. When I did that it fired right up and took right off. See either the Bentley manual or the Haynes manual. Hope this helps. I also found a good used air mass meter, but do the marks first. Do not confuse this with timing your engine with the light, that comes later.
