Lil' Whiner 200 1983

My 240 4 speed has been starting to whine every now and again. It sounds like the drive line. Center bearing has been replaced not long ago, along with a new clutch assembly. So I am thinking it's in the tranny. If fluid level is low will that cause the trans. to get noisy? Should I change the fluid and what about the OD unit?? Thanks for the help.

The diff can be a whiner. My '83 has had a diff whine since I got it in '93 - never got worse, never got better, regardless of fluid changes and other stuff. I'm hoping my new 3.91 will eliminate the noise.

How long ago is "not long ago" for the center bearing? And was it Scantech? People on this board have reported the Scantech bearings only lasting a couple years. Generally a problem with your tranny will be more of a grindy noise than the high-pitched whistley whine that comes from our old friend the support bearing.

It hasn't been 2 years yet for the center bearing.....

Still, people have complained about Scantech center bearings not lasting 2 years, so don't be so sure that's not the culprit. A slightly misaligned installation, if the bearing mount needed replacing and wasn't, or a cheap aftermarket bearing are scenarios that could easily cause an early burnout of the bearing. Anyway, is this whine pretty much identical in pitch and tone to the sound it was making 2 years ago? If so, check there first before you suspect less likely candidates like the diff, tranny, or rear wheel bearings.
